Death Valley is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the
United States. Its complex geology
draws scientists from all over the world.
This picture was taken from Zabriskie Point which is only a few miles
from the Furnace Creek visitor center.
The light yellow playa beds of the Furnace Creek Formation are in the
foreground, and Manly Point is to the right center. At an elevation of 6732
ft., Tucki Mountain is situated directly behind Manly Point. The view is
oriented looking west across the valley toward the magnificent Panamint Range.
In this second
photo the view is much the same, but the contact between the Furnace Creek and
Funeral Formation is visible. The
tilted beds of these formations are evidence of the tectonic forces that shaped
the valley that we see today.
