Hole In the Wall

These Mio-Pliocene Hole-in-the-Wall conglomerates and sandstones

accumulated along the active segment of the Furnace Creek basin.

The Hole-in-the-Wall member is part of a fan delta complex originating

from the Funeral Mountains, depositing into (the now dry) Lake Zabriskie.

Sedimentation in this area was greatly influenced from the strong dip-slip

movement of the Furnace Creek fault.   This is a good location to exercise the

clues in paleo “up” directions.  Grain size grades from large cobbles to sand

sized grains in short episodes, which gives us the impression that deposition

was very rapid and happened many times in this area.

the abrupt folding of sandstone units
