Miscellaneous
Where can I get help and report a problem (admin/application)?
You will get the quickest and most valuable assistance from your neighbor or another knowledgeable user.
We also have a little bit of on-line documentation at http://www.ceri.memphis.edu/computer/docs/index.shtml.
The University provides extensive documentation on a host of things at ITD's (Information Technology Division) website http://itd.memphis.edu/.
The Advanced Learning Center at the FIT (FedEx Institute of Technology) has some "how to guides" for various Microsoft Office, Netscape, etc tools.
The University purchased access to Element K, an e-learning service provider. The system provides online tutorials for various office productivity, computer professional, and e-business packages. Register for the service at www.memphis.edu/cbt.
Report problems using the Action Request System (ARS) at http://www.ceri.memphis.edu/computer/service/index.shtml. Try to explain the problem in as much detail as possible (its broke is often very difficult to troubleshoot or repeat).
If you find a problem, please report it by submitting an ARS instead of just getting up and moving to the next machine. We can't fix what we don't know about.
If you have a complaint or suggestion feel free to send an email to any of the computer staff (Mitch Withers, Chris Watson, Steve Brewer, Dave Greganti).
How do I print a document/What printers are available?
UNIX: I use lpr. I also have an alias for printing two pages
of text on a side that looks like this:
alias prettyprint '/usr/openwin/bin/mp -l -o -s \!* < \!* | lpr'
For images use xv or something. To see what printers are available,
use the lpstat -a command or the CDE (Solaris Common Desktop
Environment) print manager gui which should be available under the
printer icon on you desktop toolbar.
Check http://www.ceri.memphis.edu/computer/resources/printers.shtml for available printers.
How do I maintain a web page?
You should have a directory called "public_html" in your home directory
on the Sun network. Using your favorite html editor, create a file
called index.html within your public_html directory. This will be
accessible from the web via http://www.ceri.memphis.edu/~
The University also offers a web page generator for faculty and staff
that can be found at http://itd.memphis.edu/resources.
Pages can be written using several tools such as Netscape Composer. You
can also save a Microsoft word or powerpoint file as html.
How do I access email?
This is done using your University account through your favorite mailtool
or browser.
One popular option is with Netscape Communicator. From off campus, you
can point your browser to postoffice.memphis.edu. See
umdrive.memphis.edu for more details.
