Welcome to the Data Science and Earthquake Physics Group (EPG) at the University of Memphis! The group, led by PI Goebel, includes 1 PostDoc and 5 graduate students. The following pages provide information about research projects, group members and opportunities for students (undergrad and grad students). The EPG studies faults and earthquakes at many scales from micro to macro, fast to slow, single events to cascades, natural to induced events. The group tries to address some fundamental questions in seismology such as: What conditions promote slip instability and earthquakes? How do faults react to natural and induced stress perturbations? Why do some earthquakes occur in isolation while others lead to cascades of subsequent aftershocks? To tackle these questions our team employs empirical observations and machine learning, as well as laboratory experiments and numerical modeling.
