Tech Staff Meeting Notes February 6, 2018
The top priority is always repair of down stations.
NM problem stations
ET problem stations
Duty Table updated October 2017
Funding for year 4 is in hand.
N4 O&M will transition from IRIS to USGS ASL.
Travel instructions for NetOps participants will go out this week. The workshop is March 20-21. http://www.ceri.memphis.edu/people/mwithers/NetOpsIX/
Bob Herrmann identified some metadata issues for a few strongmotion channels.
The magnitudes for the 1976 M5.0 Marked Tree earthquake and its largest aftershock have been updated to Mwr 4.62 and 4.23 respectively.
Dave is going through every IP device the seisnets own. Most are in decent shape. A few need firewalls.
Pile of old, mostly Sun, hardware is gone. The paperwork was a nightmare.
SIS is fully operational for Memphis stations. Now each person needs to keep
it up to date for equipment for which they are responsible (from the June 2014
Make sure Mitch gets an email for any equipment change that will generate a SIS update. Philip Crotwell has an app that let's you do updates on your phone.
We've been inconsistent with portables in SIS. The data do not go to IRIS but arrivals do go to Comcat. Should the metadata be in SIS or not? Answer: While metadata for portables is allowed to be in SIS, its not required.
Bob Herrmann used data from the AK M7.9 earthquake to check strongmotion metadata and found a couple problems. Dave and Mitch are working on it. See the notes
Steve purchased a prototype new pc for the nodes and will be getting additional units for all nodes. We'll use the existing XP machines to run adsend, but will move all other processes to the new linux boxes. The prototype will have an 8-core atom processor in a supermicro mini rack mount. Power supply is 200W AC but can also run on 12VDC with a max draw of 144W. Its not yet known what the actual operational load will be.
Data taken from:
BOAR - spikes
BRNM.EHN - see image
COKM - spikes

NHAR - "
QUAR - "
No connection to GILT. They have a new ISP but say we should be able to connect with the configs we're using. Can connect from other systems but not from rhydra1.
There are 7 ISIS3 upgrades to do in 2018.
I40 Bridge comms.
Received radios for some links. Need to reestablish contacts with law school and get that link going. Need to get a firewall for aztnworm.
Granite HD4 on the bridge is not responding. The reset only works on one of the recorders (HD7?). Need a lane closure to make repairs.
Put an iboot at MKTA?
Need to purchase new receivers to fix the analog glitches. A minimum order is 10.
Need to tune the NMAD node receivers (its been a couple decades).
AZTN/HDBR: Need to pull the 200' sensor at the weigh station. Probable water damage.
Flooding in the expansion space has become a problem. A Workorder was submitted and P-plant engineers were on-site to assess the problem. The most likely solution will be a retention wall and removal of material to make the foundation above grade. There are several open work orders. Jim will make a prioritized list and speak with zone supervisor.
GFM and DSNC have polarity reversals. These were affected by the ISIS4 bug but had their canisters replaced last year. Jim reports that the data at GFM was fixed after the canister replacement on Nov 15, 2016. See additional notes.
Replacement station for GTTN and RBNC being evaluated and permissioned for Southern Highlands Science Learning Center at Purchase Knob (MaggieValley), a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. John found a possible new site with line of site to English Mountain. Need to see what resources are on the Mountain.
Need to remove antennas, coax, and any other hardware from the tower at
Greentop. John and Chris will schedule a trip.
Data taken from:
WMTN - sporadic
ATTN ?- showed no signal on 7.9 Alaska quake.
SHTN - timing problem
Example from Nov 13, 2017
Example from Dec 3, 2017
Current camera is not compatible with any current browser. John will see if utility will provide a new one.
Move PMTN due to excessive noise and vandalism. The trees at Lone Mountian are too tall to get a signal out. Looking for an alternate site.
New plan for GFM is to keep it at existing location and convert to digital with a trillium compact which enables using the existing vault thereby minimizing the amount of hardware and supplies that need to be hiked in. The first test of the digital link between GFM and hpnc was unsuccessful but this needs to be repeated with a pop-up antenna when a larger crew is available.
WMTN pit needs to be moved due to erosion.
Amorel station is online.
Bob has $8k remaining in current budget year that needs to be obligated prior to 2/28/18. He wants to build a new station near Clifton, TN (middle TN). There is hard rock available and we don't need to use the triangle style mounts. Need to rent a Pionjar to drill a meter long 1 inch hole for the monument.
Z41A has a poor connection with AT&T. Can we switch to Verizon?
Need to replace obsolete routers at all AG stations. The ubiquitis are good but run hot and are power hogs.
HHAR needs a bigger solar regulator. The new one should last a year.
