One of U.S. Geological
Survey's Earthquake Hazard Program's
major emphases is reducing earthquake hazards in the central and eastern
United States (CEUS). This effort involves USGS staff working all across
the nation, but primarily located in Golden, Colorado, and at the USGS
field office in Memphis, TN.
USGS
Memphis office
This USGS field office was
established to provide a point of contact for the public, engineers, scientists,
and emergency managers for USGS information and activities in the Central
United States. It is located at Center
for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) on the campus of The
University of Memphis.
Earthquake Loss Reduction
in the Central & Eastern US Project (pdf)
The USGS's effort internally
to reduce earthquake hazards in the CEUS and Puerto Rico is comprised by
four integrated tasks. Task 1 is the production of URBAN HAZARD MAPS. Task
2 focuses on PARTNERING WITH OTHER USGS PROGRAMS AND GOVERNMENTAL AND PRIVATE
ORGANIZATIONS TO BETTER COMMUNICATE AND MITIGATE EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS IN
THE CEUS. Task 3 focuses on REDUCING THE UNCERTAINTIES IN CEUS EARTHQUAKE
HAZARD ASSESSMENT by broadening our understanding of intraplate earthquake
processes and their effects. Task 4 addresses EARTHQUAKE HAZARDS ASSESSMENT
IN PUERTO RICO and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

This suite of proto-type
maps employ the same approach as the National Maps, but include effects
of the local geology in Memphis on the shaking.
