A team of CERI scientists consisting of Jer-Ming Chiu, Paul Bodin, Mike Ellis, Howard Hwang, and Gary Patterson and Sharam Pezeshk from the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis have concluded field investigations of the Taiwan earthquake. Stay tuned to this page for field reports and photos, which will be added to the website as they come in. The recent earthquakes in Taiwan are of interest to CERI because of similarities of fault structure and setting with the New Madrid seismic zone. Also, Taipei is located in a structural basin of sediments, which is similar to the geologic setting around Memphis. This project is supported by the Institute of Earth Sciences in Taiwan and The University of Memphis.
Report from the fieldDAY 1: The team reported in to CERI upon their arrival in Taipei on Oct 1 at 11:30 am CDT (12:30 a.m. Saturday morning) after prolonged delays at the Tokyo airport due to the nuclear accident nearby. Gary Patterson remarked that the "vibrant metropolis" of Taipei is basically still thriving despite localized building damage and many power outages. The group will leave on Saturday for the city of Taichung, which suffered the most damage per capita from the earthquake. The team will spend the day investigating fault ruptures in the nearby countryside. DAY2: Field Report and Photos DAY3: Notes from Paul's Journal and photo DAY4: Photos RETURN: A Selection from Paul's Collection Check back soon--more photos and info will be added.
