M.S. New Mexico Tech, 1994, Geophysics, Solid Earth

Mitch joined the staff at CERI in July, 1997 to assume the duties
of the Seismic Networks Director. CERI operates two seismic networks
that include 72 short-period and 12 broadband seismic stations to monitor
seismicity in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, and 20 short-period and
5 broadband seismographs in the Southern Appalachian Seismic Zone. Recent
efforts are focusing on real-time data transfer and near-real-time alert
broadcasts. The networks collaborate with researcheers from St. Louis
University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Virginia
Tech. Mitch is the institutional representative to The Council of the
National Seismic System.
Mitch's research interests include Earth tides, seismic background noise,
seismic applications for CTBT verification, digital signal processing
techniques including wavelet transforms, and automated earthquake detection
and location algorithms. A closet masochist, he enjoys writing Unix
based C programs that provide a reasonable equivalence between the literal
instructions and the conceptual intent.
