M.S. in Geophysics , National Center University, 1974
Ph.D. in Seismology, Cornell University, 1982
Immediately after graduation from Cornell, Chiu became the second
faculty member at the Center for Earthquake Research and
Information. He initiated a unique program at CERI in 1985 to design
and
implement a Portable Array for Numerical Data Acquisition (PANDA)
seismic array, and in 1992 a PANDA II, both with 3-component,
highdynamic range, telemetered seismic stations. His research
focuses on
the studies of earthquake sources, and crustal and upper mantle
structures on local, regional, and global scales, with emphasis in
major active continental regions. These regions include the Andes in
Argentina, Tibet in China, and major subduction zones in the western
Pacific and South America. His research approach is to design a
seismic experiment using PANDA and PANDA II arrays over areas of
active faults in the region.
Being interested in 3-D images of magma bodies and geothermal
areas using P and S data from dense array, his past and continuing
research projects focused on areas including eastern Taiwan and
New Zealand. He has two ongoing seismic array experiments in
central eastern Taiwan and New Zealand (completion- mid-1995),
and will begin two more experiments in northeastern China and
southern Taiwan.
PANDA projects have proved successfully that improvements in
collecting earthquake data provides seismologists unprecedent-
ed opportunities to explore the nature of earthquakes and the
earth's structures .
