Working Group on Data Conversion
Meeting Notes October 10, 2008

Attending: Withers, C. Chiu, J.-M. Chiu, DeShon, Smalley, Asmerom

The committee reviewed the charge from the Director:

Develop software/hardware protocols for efficient conversion of legacy and CERI field deployment datasets into community-readable seismic databases. Task for Fall 2008: Prepare the Argentina Panda Experiment data into a fully compliant IRIS SEED volume. Identify existing datasets for conversion. Suggest a schedule for converting those datasets. Report: November 2008 R&O Meeting and thereafter.

There are already rudimentary CSS3.0 tables for the panda datasets that are on disk though not all fields are populated that are required for a clean run of dbverify.

Bini is progressing on populating the san juan tables and has the site, chan times corrected and the wfdisc populated. He's cleaning the remaining dbverify complaints. Next he'll work on the instrument transfer function tables. Heather said these can be a basic ascii format not unlike sac polezero files. For the san juan data, these are L28/pandaI responses. We'll figure out what to do about gain ranging later. It seems realistic to expect a seed volume by the end of the semester or sooner. He is keeping notes so that procedures can be passed to Christy.

Bini is running out of space in his home directory. Mitch will carve out a larger working area for him somewhere.

For other data sets (e.g. ESEE) there are no pre-existing tables. These will need to be created by hand or using other tools. Note that Mitch does have programs to populate sac headers and there is a sac2db in the AUG program suite. Also, there are tables for the permanent network as it was in about 2000 or 2002.

Not sure how much space is required but we would like to keep both original data and table data online if possible. For example, the panda data should be converted to sac so we have both sac and panda format data.

Mitch still has concerns about the legality of including permanent network data in this process. Do we need to disable db2orb? He will contact Tim.

Mitch will contact Tim to make sure IRIS actually wants all these data. JerMing does have network codes for all the panda deployments.

JerMing will identify panda data sets available and Mitch will identify fdl data sets. Mitch will also canvas the faculty.

Heather will review antelope basics with Christy.

Next meeting is November 4 at 2pm in the seminar room.
