Priorities

Be present in your work and pay attention to safety. Don't fall off the end of your rope.

News & Highlights

Upcoming vacations: Cody 9/11-15.

The CERI lunch is scheduled for August 28. Please attend if you're able.

NetOps2027. Bill B. is organizing a NetOps for field crews sometime in 2027. Cody volunteered to help with planning.

I40 Bridge. Vadim is determined to restart the I40 bridge instrumentation despite the fact that there are ZERO peer reviewed publications using the data from the project during its 25 years of existence. Other than the Final Report required by TDOT in 2021, there are ZERO papers of any kind that use the data. No research or engineering, no student projects or thesis, ever used the data. It would appear the only interest the PI in Civil Engineering has in the project is resume padding and bragging rights. If the bridge project is funded, Mitch advises all staff to pay attention to their effort certifications and make sure they accurately reflect time spent on it.

Eric may have several nanometrics sensors that were supposed to be used for upgrades to the SLU network. He is generating a list and we will need a site visit to fetch them. August update: the list generation is going rather slowly.

Can close: NMDM, WALK, MTAR, and CSTN. Repair others on the down list. POBM and PPLM are on the down list but Holly would like to keep them. Please let's avoid leaving too much orphaned hardware in the field.

Preventive Maintenance. Jim's spreadsheets for most recent service:

NMSZ Service Status

Old note carried forward. USGS is moving forward with their SLU adoptions. Unfortunately they haven't yet changed any stations from NM to GS. Mitch will continue pushing for this after the shutdown ends. See this map for plans and progress.

Helene Upgrade and Hardening

The last two sets of DM26 hardware from ASL shipped Aug 10.

Congress approved Helene Disaster relief funding in December 2024 and it included funds to upgrade/harden 13 NM and ET stations in disaster declared states (TN, NC, SC, GA, and VA). We upgraded 4 stations in 2025: ASTN, CCNC, VHTN, and WMTN2. Upgrades in 2026 so far are ETT (May), ARPT (April), CMGA (June), DSNC (Aug) and TVNC2 (Aug) leaving two ET (LRVA, MGNC) and two NM (FPST, MFRT) to complete.

The budget includes: Supplies $5600/station = $44,800, Travel $5312, and Gas $2,038.

NMSZ

MKTA server upgrade is complete. LNXT is next. NMAD, High Peak, and MTTN also need upgrades.

MTTN supermicro is moved from our rack to the College's racks and the rack was returned to CERI.

Jim reports Cody and Nick have 60% of NM/AG PMs, 50% of ET, and 55% (5/9) of AG complete.

NMAD node building has a leaky roof. Need to hire a contractor to make the repair, clean, and paint.

Remove abb hardware from water tower at Peckerwood Point.

CVTN/CVMS. Vaults are ready to reoccupy. Bob is installing a cell modem for CVMS so we can reinstall CVTN and piggyback. The station CVTN is still active in SIS but it has no active channels.

ETSZ

GMG needs a new cable for the titan.

LRVA is closed due to Helene damage. A crew was able to make it to the site and found a nearby clearing formed by the storm that could be suitable. It won't make the telemetry shot so will need to be a cell modem.

Etowah utilities is running fiber up to Starr Mt. They seemed amenable to sharing bandwidth with us if it can be made to work with our router. Could then get the camera going again. Camera is damaged and needs replaced. And we can bail on the Dalton link.
