News & Highlights

Annual Seisnet progress report to USGS is due Dec 1. Please send bullets for accomplishments to Mitch by Wednesday Nov 18.

Jim will join John in ET week of Nov 16 to finish fgtn-MTTN link and get VHTN and LRVA back online. John and Jim will also pull the hardware at Sparta and replace S5NC with an older AG Reftek and TCPH system. We'll keep the ASL radio there and return the other two. Jim will return with all the hardware and do the Centaur upgrade at CLTN on the way back time and weather permitting.

Funding for 2020DM is approved. It includes SLU adoptions and 8 NM analog station upgrades. Work is to be completed by June 30, 2021.

COVID-19 protocols remain in place and include:

NMSZ

Data gap problems persists. James is working on the missed messages in the bofur and gimli import shared memory rings.

NM Broadband upgrades (replace refteks with centaurs) are complete except for HICK (no access due to crops).

SM upgrades (CMG5TD to etna2) are complete except for CSTN (no access due to coronavirus closures).

Remaining Refteks ready for Centaurs in NM are: PWLA, CLTN, and HICK.

WALK needs to move, Dave has a new site selected.

SLU Adoptions are progressing.

Misc Problems
CACT.EHE - drifting
HOVM.EHN - spikes

The Cascadia for RDGT and Compact for PWLA are in house. The PWLA TC was loaned to the Sparta deployment.

ETSZ

Next up week of Oct 19: Centaur and Xetawave upgrades at LRVA and VHTN. This will take 4 people. The link between fgtn and mttn is not stable. The GE radios are not apparently able to handle that level of continuous traffic. They were also creating interference with the DTYN link at Star Mountain. We'll switch to a xetawave.

Remaining Refteks ready for Centaurs in ET are: CPCT, BCRT, CMGA, DYTN, WSNC, SWET, and FPAL.

CSTN is now digital. Three associated links are improved.

The GFM sensor was replaced and the noise is much better. But it is still noisy on the horizontals in the 0.1 to 0.08 band and the noise in irregular. The cable may still be tugging on the instrument. The tall trees may also be a factor though we haven't had consistent clear weather to test it. We are investigating the feasibility and ability to get a permit for a helicopter drop (600-1,000 lbs) to install a new CERI-style vault (the type used in our freefield strongmotion sites). We may be able to get assistance from the Guard if we go through TEMA. This is on hold. Mitch did not request it in 2020 DM due to travel concerns related to the pandemic.

GFM has a recurring power problem combined with poor cell coverage. This was repaired but weak cell signal remains. Need a booster.

CPRT needs new VPN creditials to connect to new server that replaced rhydra4. Currently udp is sneaking through on the reftek rdp but need the credential to make direct connections with two-way communications. Site access is under coronovirus restrictions.

ASTN-MTTN had antenna upgrades and the GE radios were replaced with Freewaves. It remains unclear why exactly the GE radios did not work though they appear much more sensitive to degraded signal strength. This links repeats 9 channels and MTTN has a lot of RF noise so the GE radios should be less problematic on strong links with a single station. We will try Zetawave radios there.

Replacement station for GTTN and RBNC needs a new plan. A cell modem would provide more options.

BCRT had an intermittent 40Hz spike.

ETDown

We are having issues with gaps in some of the strong motion station data so I can't tell which stations are having problems until the issue is resolved.

Misc Problems
DSNC - node connection problem
MGNC - "

TRYN.EHZ - drifting

STAR Node

Camera at Star Mt was replaced and the new one is working great. It needs some quality time with the configs to make it more useful.

John will send the STAR SOH hardware to James to figure out how to send alarms.

Move PMTN due to excessive noise and vandalism. John has a site and sent a draft MOU to Mitch. The University did not ask for changes and asked for the WMA director to sign first, its currently in Nashville for approval. A portable was installed and shows no surprises, it should a good quiet site.

HPNC Node

Internet is down. Lost a router and possibly a port on the switch owned by the host. John replaced the router and the host (the City of Morganton) is looking at the switch.

MTTN Node

GPS

Mitch will schedule a zoom session with Bob S.

New station near Clifton, TN was installed the first week of December, 2019. There is currently no telemetry. The plan is to telemeter to a nearby water tower, then to a local community college on public internet.

Lake County upgrade hardware is ready to go.

NWCC needs a new receiver from Bob.

MAIR needs a new antenna. Probably best to just upgrade to a Septentrio. Need a receiver from Bob.

AG Network

FCAR has a borrowed T120. The FCAR sensor is in the test vault where Dave found secondary firmware image is corrupt. The manufacturer recommends returning the sensor to have the firmware upgraded (there are two copies to facilitate updates and failure recovery). If it goes back to the manufacturer, then the paperwork needs to be completed to "move" the spare from the lab to FCAR in the inventory.

WHAR can be put back on the local network.

FCAR telemetry upgrade needs to be mocked up and installed. We can then remoe the repeater.

FDL

FDL needs better battery storage (should be on contained platform rather than the floor).

FDL cleanup continues. Rather than obsolesce the old mk2/serial fire-wire CMG6TDs, we'll put them in long term storage instead (fdl attic, mcgoldrick garage attic, or house 3 cedar closet are all good candidates).
