Tech Staff Meeting Notes February 3, 2003
Current Top Priorities are:Racks, FDL, CPCT, GPS
Priorities
Station Maintenance. The usual.
Ford repair. Mac will get this done possibly the week of Feb 10.
ATHN. Works sort of. Connection is intermittent. Steve is fighting Bellsouth bureaucracy.
2002 ANSS. Done. Got 3 repaired sensors. One is for SFTN and the other for Jackson. New contact at JSCC, Steve Parr is the new director of P-Plant. About as responsive as previous contacts. Might soon be time to bail.
GPS. Marcello provided this todo list. Mac and Marcello can spend a couple days on this the week of Feb 3.
FDL. Need to wipe 4 latptops and reload. Need an image. Then investigate dual boot Windows/Linux.
DBB. DONE!!!!!!
PERC. Done. After speaking with Gary about other plans, they are rather ambitious and beyond the realm of what we should be doing. We can provide seismometry assistance but I wish not to get into the museum disply design, engineering, and manufacture business.
CPCT. Need to do the prep for install week of Feb 17. Got the freewaves, sensor looks good. John is installing the tower base this week.
Second Tier Priorities
CVTN optical isolation.
Do we want to convert old sm stations (i.e. TUMT, RALT, and MLNT) to ISISII?
BB Test Facility. Can Gary get MLGW to dig the hole?
Oakridge. Mitch has no clue where we are on this. Last spoke with Martin there was no rush but needed Greg to make a site recon.
SEKY and VBMS. Two new NSN stations. Parker is looking into re-occupying the old CGNP cave sitefor SEKY. Hoping to do a VBMS noise study the week of Feb 17. Contacts are slow though.
Timing. Greg has an easy way to generate a datastream that goes high when lock is lost. Need a worm module to monitor. BB monitoring is more difficult. How do we automate the status stream or even get it back to Memphis for logging? (Save it to file with Scream?).
Still need to finish 4th channel up grade on about 1.5 nodes. Still need a degaining subroutine for ISIS.
Computer Room Power. Generator hooked into the worms. Work continues.
The original seisnets racks need new batteries.
Nodes need new batteries. Could extend life of new batteries if we had new chargers but this will take time we don't have right now.
Got another 20 ANSS sites to do for FY03. Mitch has contacted Jim Lawson regarding two OK sites. Will again use Charleston Southern U for two sites. SLU will put 5 in St Louis. Rest are kind of up in the air. Should have about 8 sensors within a month or two. Planned stations are:
Urban Area | Number Sites | Owner |
---|---|---|
St Louis, MO | 5 | SLU |
Knox/Chatt, TN | 3 | CERI |
Evansville, IN | 2 | SLU |
Charleston, SC | 2 | CERI |
Cape G., MO | 2 | SLU? |
OK City, Ok | 2 | OGS? |
El Paso, TX | 2 | UTEP? |
Louisville, KY | 2 | KGS? |

Greg was ruminating and came up with this todo list. Much of it that relates to other stuff has been incorporated here.
Monroe. Still want to. But when and where?
I-40 Bridge. Greg needs to spend yet more time in February after boards are done. Should have recorders in March. Then we can build the mockup and let it run for 3-4 months.
BB network upgrade. If funds can be obtained, wish to upgrade NMSZ broadband network to DM24 and duplex comm. Greg got a DM24 quote from DTA. Are freewaves the best option for the radios? Is there a cheaper lower power solution?
Mitch will check with Lamont on fate of network given recent ANSS installations.
3904/215E. Will expand into the closet and be used as a computer setup/testing lab.
Calibrate S-13's.
Battery charging station
Leanto drainage.
Giddings rebuild. Done.
Permanent station at HOGG?
UM offers various computer application courses (e.g. Word, Excel, etc). the Spring schedule will be available soon. Check the IS Training Center website for more details.
