University and CAS requirements

(subtext: can a student do this program in 120 credits?)

We've only listed the things that are relevant to our curriculum.

The University requires:

for Maths: 1 of Elementary Calculus or Calculus 1.

for Natural Sciences, 8 hours that includes each of the first two courses in physics, biology, chemistry, and (to be) DES. The minimum a student needs here is two courses, each with a lab. We would be requiring more; see the proposed model.

For the College of Arts and Sciences:

3-4 hours of Math/Natural Science (but not in the major). This could include 1 math course (e.g., Calc 2, a programming or stats course) or one of the other physics courses.

In terms of credit hours, the requirements are as follows:

General Education: 41-42

CAS: 15-16

DES upper division and as currently proposed: common core: 17-18 (17-21)*, concentration: 12-15 = a total of 29-30 (29-33)*.

* if both process courses are to be required.

This gives a total of 85-94, leaving 26-35 for electives plus A, where A = the remaining external core that has not been obtained in the U/CAS credit count, and the introductory courses not obtained in the U/CAS credit count. The likely credit hour total for A is 16-24, leaving 2-11 for electives.

An important question/issue for discussion in a workshop:

Our goal should be to increase the number of electives that a student can opt for?
