Matlab contains hundreds of functions and operators. I do not pretend to know everything there is to know about Matlab or even to use it in the most efficient way possible. However, I've picked up a few tricks from my colleagues and students that have enabled me to use Matlab to perform several types of calculations that have been useful in my research. Here are a number of topics that may be of use to a student geophysicist in getting started with Matlab. Roy Greenfield, Tom Battenhouse, Heather Hennessey Parizek, and Meghan Keohane, all from Penn State, have all been great teachers and I thank them for their insights, suggestions, and programming methods.
Rather than going through the standard Matlab tutorials, I've chosen to discuss several examples of Matlab programming.
