Ft. Payne Earthquake Aftershock Monitoring

The aftershocks were all recorded prior to noon, April 29 by the permanent network. Magnitudes ranged in the 2.0-2.5 range. The largest aftershock occurred at 05:45:41 eastern, with a magnitude of about 2.4.

The first temporary station was operational by about 5PM eastern time and 5 were installed by about 8PM. At at least 3 more stations are being installed today. We will likely keep the array installed for at least 3 weeks.

Over a dozen aftershocks were recorded by the permanent network prior to about noon April 29. After that, they became too small to observe on the permanent network (closest station is Rock City, GA, 60km distant).

At least 5 very small aftershocks (less than magnitude 1) were recorded on the temporary array overnight.

Field Crew is: Steve Horton, Jim Bollwerk, Chris McGoldrick, John Filipcic, and John Parker.

Preliminary analysis of temporary network data as of 8 May, 2003.
